Last Thursday, 150 Mocha Moms, from various chapters convened at the White House for a moms briefing with several high-ranking officials including Lisa Jackson, Administrator from the Environmental Protection Agency.

From the moment we entered the White House it was quite obvious the energy, passion and dedication for ‘change’ was in the air- from the interns to the top officials.

Lisa Jackson talked about how as mothers, we do not utilize our skills to negotiate, manage, maneuver and strategize as it relates to business. Jackson said, “You have skills that you can use to get the job, don’t be afraid to promote your motherhood skills when it comes to deal making and promoting your personal brand.”

All the topics at the briefing was mom friendly.

From affordable health care; breastfeeding; Asthma; air pollution; lifestyle; career; and most importantly; leveraging motherhood skills to negotiate the workforce/community to bring about CHANGE.

There has been so much said about the untimely death of superstar, Whitney Houston in the last week by the media and most of it has been negative.

Say what you want about Whitney Houston, however, please include the pride, joy, love, glow and her greatest gift from God – motherhood. She loved her baby, Bobbi Kristina, and that was always always evident regardless of what was going on in her life.

I will remember the countless interviews where Whitney Houston talked about motherhood, and the ultimate gift of Bobbi Kristina her amazing daughter and the unconditional love they shared.

Whitney Houston, I salute you for your greatest contribution and your legacy — Bobbi Kristina. Here’s to your peace and grace!

I am so excited to attend the White House Briefing for Moms of color with my Mocha Moms on Thursday and a special tour of the East Wing on Friday. Thank you God for your favor.

Be a Change Agent!

BNM,

Jeremy Lin-sanity has taken over New York and it’s spreading like wildfire throughout the NBA.

It’s an exciting time to follow basketball and watch the NY Knicks.

Watching Jeremy Lin reminded me as a PR/Branding Expert that it is never too late to become a change agent in our respective lives.

Lin is Asian, graduated from Harvard, played with at least two NBA teams and was relegated to the bench. It was not until the NY Knicks’ back was against the wall did the coach consider putting Lin in as a last ditch effort.

Jeremy Lin has changed the game.

The message here is to be prepared; you never know when you will be called to be a changed agent. A changed agent is a person who brings a refreshing way to breathe life into a stagnant situation and decides to step away from what is traditional and might not be working.

I am a basketball sports enthusiast and love to watch the unpredictability of the outcome in sports as in life. You can never predict the winner — anything can happen when you have time on the clock.

Lin has resuscitated the NY Knicks, possibly saved a coach’s job along with restoring fun, passion, team playing and a winning streak back to a depressed deficient team of players and franchise.

Thank you Jeremy Lin for inspiring us all and proving that familiar is not always better.

Tips to Learn from Jeremy Lin:

1) Practice. Take care of your craft/gift, there will come a chance for you to show and prove.
2) Starting is over-rated. It’s not how you start; it’s how you show-up each and every moment that sets the tone.
3) Be a Boy/Girl Scout. Take the mantra of a scout and always be prepared to show your talent and contribute to a team situation.
4) Declare your intentions. Always declare and know how you will live your life authentically.
5) Stay on message. Consistency always delivers the prize.

All I can say is that my prayers are with the Houston/Brown family and God’s special grace on Bobbi Kristina.
